Whitebark Pine Tree Will get Endangered Species Act Safety

In December, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service introduced a remaining motion to record the whitebark pine tree as threatened below the federal Endangered Species Act.

“The official itemizing of whitebark pine has been 14 years within the making,” says Diana Tomback, a lead scientist on the Nationwide Whitebark Pine Restoration Plan. “These of us who labored for many years on whitebark pine within the northern Rocky Mountains … had been properly conscious that the tree was in hassle 25 to 30 years in the past.

“The itemizing of whitebark pine offers authority, coordination, extra funding sources, and shortly, a roadmap for restoration,” says Tomback, who’s a professor of integrative biology on the College of Colorado Denver, and in addition the coverage and outreach coordinator for the Whitebark Pine Ecosystem Basis.

In keeping with USFWS itemizing paperwork, the vary of the whitebark pine within the U.S. covers about 56 million acres within the Intermountain West, and scientists estimate that greater than half of all standing whitebark pine timber are lifeless. “One important whitebark pine restoration technique is constructing genetic resistance to the unique illness white pine blister rust in native populations by planting seedlings from resistant guardian timber,” Tomback says.
