AJP photographed this squirrel on the Peak, Hong Kong island final week. I’ve written about Pallas’s Squirrel (Callosciurus erythraeus) in Hong Kong earlier than, together with its origins as an escapee from the pet commerce, and the chance that some are pure re-introductions from throughout the border. This one, with the sunshine tip to the tail is typical of those discovered on Hong Kong island. Evaluate this with one he photographed within the New Territories (right here) with the black ‘spot’ within the tip of the tail. The crimson stomach—typically not that simple to see from the aspect—which isn’t a continuing function, will be seen on this one.
It has been argued that these within the New Territories are the subspecies C. e. styani and people on Hong Kong island are C. e. thai.
