The Mosasauridae are extinct members of the Order Squamata. They’re distantly associated to lizards and snakes. Caldey has given her Mosasaurus a forked tongue and pterygoid enamel, two traits that underline the taxonomic relationship between these marine reptiles and dwelling members of the Squamata.
The artist depicts the mosasaur swimming near the water’s floor. It’s thought that almost all mosasaurs did frequent the floor zone of the ocean (Epipelagic zone), though some mosasaur fossils are related to estuarine and freshwater environments.
Caldey has chosen to provide her mosasaur a putting color scheme with using dramatic reds and blues. The underside is a lighter color and displays countershading. Most palaeontologist suppose, that identical to dwelling sharks, mosasaurs had been countershaded with gentle undersides and darker backs.
The colouration of mosasaurs stays controversial. In 2014 researchers from Lund College (Sweden), printed a paper within the journal “Nature”, that reported the invention of melanin within the preserved scales of a mosasaur’s pores and skin.
