Oriental Dollarbird in Hong Kong


AJP noticed this Oriental Dollarbird from his flat above Kowloon Tong in Hong Kong. The Oriental Dollarbird (Eurystomus orientalis) is a passage migrant in Hong Kong, heading north in spring and south in winter. It heads as far north as Russia, northern China and southern Japan. Its stronghold is southeast Asia however it’s also a summer season customer to jap Australia, reaching the coastal areas of Victoria. It’s a member of the curler household and was identified in Hong Kong because the Broad-billed Curler. It’s now way more frequent in Hong Kong than within the early a long time of the twentieth century. Geoffrey Herklots famous that he had just one seen this species in over 15 years. That was on 27 September 1945, his first birdwatching stroll after launch from Japanese internment at Stanley.

We didn’t see this species in Hong Kong within the Nineteen Sixties however have executed so since 1997 after we first went again. We’ve got seen it in Borneo (Sabah) and on Langkawi, Malaysia.
