a color plate from 1969

Within the days when color printing was extraordinarily costly, the Avicultural Society had particular appeals for funds to help the looks in Avicultural Journal of the occasional color plate. A widely known fowl artist was then commissioned. Though the entire run of the Society’s magazines may be discovered on-line, the plates hardly ever see the sunshine of day. Due to this fact I made a decision to point out one, every now and then, on this website. That is the fifteenth within the sequence.

The plate was the work of John Raymond Quinn (1938-2012). He was employees artist on the Academy of Pure Sciences of Philadelphia.

The article accompanying this plate was written by Jan Roger van Ooosten (1934-2005) who described his efforts to maintain the 2 species of manakin in captivity after trapping them in Ecuador. An novice aviculturalist he turned director of Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle in 1971-1974 after working for Texaco. He developed a selected curiosity in Amazon parrots.

The Golden-headed manakin (now Ceratopipra erythrocephala) and Golden-winged Manakin (Masius chrysopterus), like the remainder of the household, are identified for his or her shows throughout lekking. We noticed round 5 males of the previous species in Guyana in 2006, making some effort at a show however not the full-blown spectacle.
